March 2024: Domain Activity Highlights

WhoisXML API researchers analyzed more than 7.3 million domains registered between 1 and 31 March 2024 to identify global domain registration trends, including the most popular registrars, registrant countries, and top-level domain (TLD) extensions.

We also studied the TLD usage and associated threat type breakdown of more than 1.1 million domains detected as indicators of compromise (IoCs) in March.

Finally, we summarized the findings and provided links to the threat reports produced during the period with the aid of DNS, IP, and domain intelligence sources.

February 2024: Domain Activity Highlights

WhoisXML API researchers analyzed more than 6.6 million domains registered between 1 and 29 February 2024 to identify global domain registration trends, including the most popular registrars, registrant countries, and top-level domain (TLD) extensions.

We also studied the TLD usage and associated threat type breakdown of more than 1 million domains detected as indicators of compromise (IoCs) in February.

Finally, we summarized the findings and provided links to the threat reports produced during the period with DNS, IP, and domain intelligence sources.

December 2023: Domain Activity Highlights

WhoisXML API researchers analyzed more than 9.6 million domains registered between 1 and 31 December 2023 to identify domain registration trends, including the most used top-level domain (TLD) extensions and registrars.

Our researchers also studied the TLD usage and threat type of about 1.5 million domains tagged as indicators of compromise (IoCs) in December. The findings are summarized below, along with links to the threat reports developed using DNS, IP, and domain intelligence sources.

November 2023: Domain Activity Highlights

WhoisXML API researchers analyzed more than 8.7 million domains registered between 1 and 30 November 2023 to identify trends, such as the most used top-level domain (TLD) extensions and registrars.

We also studied the TLD usage and threat types of 1.1 million domains tagged as indicators of compromise (IoCs) in November. The findings and links to the threat reports we developed using DNS, IP, and domain intelligence sources are summarized below as well.

October 2023: Domain Activity Highlights

WhoisXML API researchers analyzed a random sample of 31,000 domains out of the millions registered in October 2023. We identified commonalities in their WHOIS data, registrant countries, registrars, and top-level domain (TLD) extensions.

In addition, we examined the domains' text string usage to discover potential emerging trends. We also used our predictive intelligence sources to identify some of the most imitated brands during the month based on text string usage. The findings of this study and links to threat reports developed using DNS, IP, and domain intelligence sources are summarized below.

September 2023: Domain Activity Highlights

WhoisXML API researchers studied a randomized sample of 30,000 domains out of the millions registered on 1–30 September 2023. We determined commonalities in their WHOIS data, registrant country, registrar, and TLD.

In addition, we examined the domains’ text string usage to uncover potentially emerging trends. We also tapped into our predictive intelligence sources to determine some of the month’s most imitated brands based on text string usage. This study’s findings and links to threat reports developed using DNS, IP, and domain intelligence sources are summarized below.
